When do I need to use Dosimetry Badges?

Each state has its own regulations for radiation monitoring. With radiation exposure on the rise due to medical uses, laws are ever changing and expanding causing increasing regulation on monitoring services. Outside of law requirements radiation monitoring helps in two specific ways for any business or entity:

1) Badge service helps to protect and ensure your employees are not overexposed to radiation in the workplace.
2) Protects the business in an unfortunate event that your employee becomes sick, for whatever reason (the most common form of serious cancer in your industry is most likely thyroid cancer).

The dosimetry reports give a fair and accurate reading of quarterly or monthly exposure as well as a lifetime dose for every employee who wears the badge.

For further information check your state's Department of Health & Safety website.

Why Xray Dose Company?

You can shop around but honestly, you’re just wasting your time. Our customers do business with us for three reasons:

The Most Loved Dosimetry Company in the United States

We save money by cutting your cost and switching from your current vendor. On average we save boatloads of cost from our competitors. Don’t believe us, just watch!

We are friendly and easy to get a hold of via phone or email. Probably the worst invention ever was the phone tree. I’m sure it sounded great before it was ever implemented but I know you hate getting lost in some phone tree where you can’t get back to the main menu and pressing “0” doesn’t get me to an operator! Not gonna happen here. Call and talk to a real person every time! In fact, our sales team is available to be contacted 24 hours a day 7 days a week! Can't beat that!

Our staple service is an
OSL radiation dosimeter which is the most effective and accurate product on the market for personal dosimetry. There are still dosimetry companies that use film badges which is a 60 year old technology and is completely outdated. So, if you're using film badges you need to switch to OSL right away! The most important part of our technology is that it records radiation exposure with a tissue equivalent monitor.

For those seeking a more technological approach. Ask about our electronic dosimeters that give real-time updates to the end-user and a seamless reporting system conducted by bluetooth technology.

Tissue Equivalent Monitor

What does that mean for you? Our radiation dose badge records and measures ionizing radiation the same way your topical skin, your deep tissue and your eye lenses receive radiation. Basically, its the best product on the market because it is the most accurate dosimeter to monitor radiation exposure at your office, lab or workspace.

Radiation Detection Programs for the RSO

As an employer your main goal is to protect your employees by monitoring their occupational radiation exposure in the workplace with dosimeters. Dosimetry service, while being low cost, is also a means for liability standards. What do we mean by that?

By maintaining dose reports of your employees’ occupational doses to radiation this provides you with records of your employees’ exposure on a monthly or quarterly basis with an annual and lifetime record. Radiation dose limits are set to keep our workforce in a safe working environment and to protect businesses from overexposing their employees from the harmful effects of radiation.

Radiation Dosimetry Services

X-Ray Dose Company continues to expand services and products to the community it serves. The majority of manufacturers and laboratories use some of these products themselves such as Panasonic products, TLD, OSL and Harshaw dosimeters in addition to the quarterly or monthly dosimetry services. Many of these process related services include electronic reporting, records, online servicing, and 24/7 sales service. As a service package, there is no one in our profession who is more flexible in terms of dosimetry products and services than the Xray Dose Company.

Contacting clients for their
dosimeter badge is one of our top priorities.  The reason we can say that with certainty is that we are the dosimetry company who has a never-ending reach to a world of customers seeking dosimetry services from a reputable monitoring company. We will carefully depict and understand your specific needs for dosimetry in your workspace. We interdict and take charge of securing the smoothest and quickest possible transition from your current dosimetry provider.

Online Management

In addition to industry standard dosimetry, Xray Dose Company offers the most easily accessible account management system. Once your account is registered and processed with us (typically the same day), virtually all of the normal transactions involving your account can be handled though our online management system. You can add users, inactivate badges, change names on badges, download dosimetry reports and have access to your personnel dose histories, if that is what you want.

If online management isn't your thing and you need to speak with someone at Xray Dose Company, that’s what they get – no voice tree or voicemail from hell – a real live person who is trained to handle your needs, and empowered to be the customer's advocate to get them the action or other help they need.

What is ionizing radiation and why is it harmful?

Ionizing radiation is a powerful energy that can cause damage to the DNA in a cell. Exposure to this type of radiation can be very destructive to humans and animals. It destroys living tissue, and can result in mutation, radiation sickness, cancer, and even death.

Where is ionizing radiation found?

Ionizing radiation is found naturally in the earth as well as man-made materials. The most common source of natural background radiation is radon. It is commonly found naturally in rocks, soil and in cosmic rays within our solar system. It is often overlooked as it is odorless, colorless, tasteless in a gas form. It is produced as a direct result from the decay of uranium and thorium. Lung cancer has been linked to high doses of concentrated radon.

Diagnostic x-rays and nuclear medicine treatments are man-made forms of ionizing radiation within the medical sphere. Other common forms of man-made radiation is found in building materials, televisions, smoke detectors, combustible fuels and tobacco. Nuclear reactor accidents, nuclear fuel cycle and nuclear weapons testing also can cause exposure to the environment.

What are the different types of ionizing radiation?

Alpha particles consist of two protons and two neutrons bound together into a particle identical to a helium nucleus. The penetration depth is very low and they are a highly ionizing form of particle radiation. Alpha particles which pose a serious threat if ingested are not necessarily harmful if encountered externally.

Beta particles are high-energy and high-speed electrons or positrons. When passing through matter, a beta particle is decelerated by electromagnetic interactions and may give off bremsstrahlung x-rays. Due to this reaction beta particles are best shielded with low-density materials like acrylic plastic.

Gamma rays are electromagnetic radiation that consists of high frequency and therefore they are classified as high energy. They have no mass and no charge. Gamma rays are identical to x-rays with one exception. An x-ray originates from orbital electron rearrangements while gamma rays originate from the nucleus of an atom during decay. Gamma and x-rays are best shielded with lead, or other dense materials.

Neutron particles are slightly larger than protons and have a high kinetic energy. This makes neutrons extremely harmful and this type of radiation is considered to be the most severe and dangerous radiation to the whole body. Neutrons easily pass through most material, but interact enough to cause biological damage within a human body. The best way to shield from neutron exposure is with water, polyethylene, or paraffin wax.

How is ionizing radiation measured within the workplace?

Ionizing radiation can be monitored using film, thermoluminescent (TLD) dosimeters, OSL technology, or electronic/digital devices. These devices are commonly called "dosimetry badges", “radiation badges”, “x-ray badges” or “dosimeters”. Our radiation badges have elements within the dosimeter that can be read to determine an accurate exposure within the workplace. When the dosimeters are read in our equipment an algorithm is used to determine the type of energy that was exposed and an accurate dose.

What is Dosimetry?

Dosimetry is the scientific process of measuring the absorbed radiation in tissue and matter due to radiation exposure.
The most common and highly accurate method of reading and recording radiation exposure is with optically stimulated luminescense (OSL) dosimeter. While the thermoluminescent phosphors are heated the energy that was previously absorbed from radiation exposure is then re-emitted in a light form. That re-emitted light is accurately measured with the help of a fancy tool called a photo-multiplier tube. The photo multiplier tube produces a signal which caluculates the dose that the OSL had absorbed. With the use of specific chemical compounds and filter types we can determine the actual dose of radiation as well as the radiation source.

OSL radiation badges contain elements which make it the most tissue equivalent dosimeter in the market. Aluminum oxide and Beryllium oxide is considered the most tissue equivalent unlike lithium borate which is used by several other companies. Tissue equivalence is the determining factor that equates our readings to the actual doses of human tissue and skin. We provide four types of readings: shallow tissue (outer layer of skin), deep tissue (internal organs), eye tissue and exposure to neutrons.

Dosimetry History and Reporting

The science of dosimetry has been continually evolving and setting standards of dosimetry and customer service since its inception. We work among the first in the industry from its earliest days in the late 1940’s.

We offer reports in an easy-to-read and user-friendly, accessible format. We offer customized logos on our badges for our resellers of our products and services. Xray Dose Company was among the first to have a significant web presence and continually strives to make regular reports available electronically by enhancing that experience for the customer. Nowadays many customers in the marketplace now prefer to receive Electronic Dosimetry Reports only, saving time and paper. It’s good for the environment and it’s good for business.

Many of these reports and electronic management systems have been procured by other companies in our industry and have become normal practice by all quality dosimetry companies across the globe. We are especially happy to have this available for every customer who requests it. And as our world turns everything into digital so are we continuing with the trend to digitize our entire system in efforts to conserve our environment.

Why should an RSO or Oncologist have access to all other medical records electronically, but have to print out a pdf document for their radiation dose report? Now you can have the records you need immediately and manage many of the most needed functions right from your mobile device.

Dosimetry products and systems themselves are most commonly built around the OSL platforms, accepted around the world as the benchmark for reliable and quality personal dosimetry. We have services available for every diagnostic and medical need across the globe involving radiation detection and monitoring.
